Hi Jonathan,

The detailed mapping that you see on the image is street level mapping not base mapping. The base maps are non royalty maps and are therefore allowed to be loaded into the units at the time of production. All street level maps have royalties payable and must be coded to one unit and owner only which then give the detail that you are after.

Cheers

Geoff

?
Hi Jonathan.

Thanks for your email.

The image you have supplied shows the Legend C configured with the optional detailed routable City Navigator streetmap installed and a route selected. This is just one of the possible configurations for with the Legend C. It can also be loaded with detailed Marine charts. The image is designed to show some of the capabilities of the unit, it does not indicate what is installed in the unit when you purchase it. The box also indicates that the unit is supplied with a base map installed.

Out of the box, the unit has a factory fitted base map which is intended to indicate your general location with reference to other landmarks in Australia. The unit has additional internal memory to allow you to load detailed maps of your choice if you wish. The advertising in Australia clearly indicates that a limited detail base map is included and that more detailed street or marine mapping is available as an option.

You will find all manufacturers configure their handheld mapping GPS's in a similar way since they do not know the specific application the user requires or the location where the owner intends to use their GPS. The only products where manufacturers includes detailed mapping with the unit are dedicated auto-routing vehicle navigators, since these are specifically targeting street navigation applications.

Since the detailed mapping is subject to royalties in Australia (unlike the base map) the additional cost of the mapping is one of the reasons these dedicated in-car navigators are more expensive.

Please note the confidentiality notice below. This email is for the intended recipient. Posting of its content or sender details to a public forum is forbidden.
Best regards,

Ian Lindquist

i found an open source program to be used with the garman GPS's.
its supposed to be able to take data from your GPS (once you've gotten home) and plot 3d maps of where you've been.

has anyone tried this? i thought it would be cool to keep 3d maps of all of the local trails i take.
